10 Best Shopify Themes, Free and Paid (October 2026)

In this article
The best Shopify themes start with one rule: pick a free theme unless you can name a feature it lacks. On October 19, 2026, the Shopify Theme Store lists 24 free themes and 1,302 paid themes priced from $100 to $500. This guide compares 4 free and 6 paid themes using Theme Store data only.
Quick verdict
Choose a free theme if your catalog and photos are ready and no feature you need is missing from the listing. Dawn has the most reviews of the 24 free themes (290, 36% positive). From $0 (Theme Store, checked October 19, 2026).
Skip it if you need a countdown timer or a right-to-left layout in the theme itself. None of the four free listings below names either. Prestige and Pipeline do.

Choose a paid theme if you need a named feature the free listings lack, such as a sticky cart or a countdown timer, and the price fits. The six paid picks show 85% to 99% positive reviews. From $100 (Theme Store price sort, checked October 19, 2026).
Skip it if a free theme already covers your list of needs. The ratings do not show that a paid theme sells more.

Key takeaways
- Count: the Theme Store lists 24 free themes and 1,302 paid themes, 1,326 in total (checked October 19, 2026).
- Price: sorted by price, paid themes run from $100 to $500. The six paid picks cost $350 to $500.
- Rating gap: all 24 free themes show 24% to 56% positive reviews. The six paid picks show 85% to 99%. The pools differ, the figures are the Theme Store’s and not our ratings, and they do not show that a paid theme sells more.
- Free picks: Dawn (290 reviews), Horizon (211), Craft (56% positive) and Sense (74 reviews).
- Break-even (hypothetical): a $350 theme needs 1.46% more revenue over a year to pay for itself at $2,000 a month in sales.
- Speed, SEO and conversion were not measured for any theme here.
How we chose these themes
This guide uses public pages only. No theme was installed, no store was built and no paid account was opened.
- Price on the Theme Store listing, in US dollars.
- Positive-review share and review count, as the listing shows them.
- Date and version of the latest release on the listing.
- Stated fit: the tagline on the listing.
- Features the listing names, copied as listed.
- Availability: the theme is listed on the Theme Store today.
- Coverage: this site has a review page for the theme.
Free picks: Dawn has the largest review base of the 24 free themes (290) and Horizon the second largest (211). Craft has the highest positive share (56%). Sense is the fourth pick because this site has a review of it. Tinker (86 reviews) and Atelier (78) have larger review bases than Sense (74) and no review page here.
Paid picks: the six paid themes that have 200 or more reviews on the Theme Store and a review page on this site. Impact sits at exactly 200.
Checked: the Theme Store free and paid lists, the listings of the ten picks and of the 24 free themes, two review pages, the price sort, the catalog-size filter, Shopify’s help page on adding, previewing and buying themes, and one vendor pricing page. Not checked: speed, SEO, mobile behavior, accessibility, app compatibility, conversion or how any theme behaves in a live store. To test speed, run Google’s PageSpeed Insights on a theme’s demo store.

What is the best Shopify theme for your store?
Start with a free theme. Move to a paid one only when you can name a feature the free listings lack, for example a countdown timer, a sticky cart or a right-to-left layout. The table groups four free themes first, then six paid themes. The rows are not ranked.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dawn (free) | Free | 36% (290) | Photo-led catalogs | 40% negative; no slide-out cart listed. |

| Pipeline (paid) | $360 | 97% (209) | Luxury brands | No sticky cart listed. |

How many Shopify themes are there and what do they cost?
The Theme Store lists 1,326 themes: 24 free and 1,302 paid. Its list shows one card per style, so a theme with several styles appears more than once. Sorted by price, the paid list starts at $100 and ends at $500.
| Item | Count or cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free themes | 24 | Price filter “Free” on the Theme Store. |
| Paid themes | 1,302 | Price filter “Paid”. Card count as the Store shows it. |
| All themes | 1,326 | Shown as “1-24 of 1326 themes” with no filter. |
| Lowest paid price | $100 | First page of the “Price: low to high” sort. |
| Highest paid price | $500 | First page of the “Price: high to low” sort, which includes Impulse. |

A theme is one cost. A store also needs a Shopify plan. Our review of Shopify pricing plans covers what each plan includes.
Free Shopify themes: which four are worth a look?
All four free picks are made by Shopify, per the listing. The Theme Store shows a positive-review share beside every free theme, and the free themes range from 24% to 56%.

Paid Shopify themes: which six are worth the money?
Each paid pick below is sold on the Theme Store, so the price, rating and release date come from one place. Prices are one-time US dollar prices on the listing as of October 19, 2026. Shopify’s help page says a purchased theme is licensed to the store that bought it, and purchases are final sale (checked October 19, 2026).
Impulse
$500, by Archetype Themes, tagline “Flexible, fashionable, proven design with powerful promotions.” Version 10.0.0, October 9, 2026. Impulse on the Theme Store.

Best for (our reading): Fashion and apparel stores that run promotions. The listing highlights a shoppable hero, sale banners and testimonials.
Listed features: Slide-out cart, Quick buy, Quick view, Countdown timer, Promo popups, Promo tiles, Product badges, Trust badges, Before/after image slider, Image hotspot, Age verifier.
Pros
- The largest review base in this guide: 1,303 reviews across all styles, 94% positive.
- The feature list names a countdown timer, promo popups, promo tiles and trust badges.
- Several reviewers in August to October 2026 praised the publisher’s support.
Cons
- $500 is the top of the Theme Store price range.
- An August 2026 reviewer who has used it for years said the design has barely changed in five years and the header options are limited.
- No right-to-left layout in the feature list.
Skip it if your catalog is small and your budget is tight. Horizon or Craft cost nothing and list the basics.
Our review: Shopify Impulse theme review, last updated December 2024.
Prestige
$400, by Maestrooo, tagline “Designed for premium, high-end brand appeal”. Version 11.4.1, September 14, 2026. Prestige on the Theme Store.

- Lists a sticky cart, a countdown timer and a right-to-left layout.
Cons
- $400, and 64 negative reviews, the most of the six paid picks.
- No pre-order in the feature list.
- The listing’s speed claim (“lightning-fast performance”) is the publisher’s. It was not measured here.
Skip it if you sell everyday products at low prices. The “premium, high-end” pitch is aimed at the opposite.
Our review: Shopify Prestige theme review, last updated October 2026.
Eurus
$350, tagline “A conversion-focused theme for beauty brands…” Version 10.4.1, October 15, 2026. Eurus on the Theme Store. Eurus is published by BSS Commerce, the company behind eComStart.

Cons
- The listing copy speaks to beauty brands. It does not say how the sections suit other catalogs.
- 605 reviews is under half of Impulse’s 1,303.
- The listing’s Core Web Vitals claim is the publisher’s own. It was not measured here.
Skip it if you sell in a category the listing does not mention and you want proof of fit first. Open the demo and compare it with Dawn or Horizon.
Our review: Shopify Eurus theme review, last updated November 2025.

Our review: Shopify Impact theme review, last updated February 2025.
Themes sold outside the Theme Store
Some themes are sold on the publisher’s own site, with no Theme Store rating, so no comparable review data exists. Our guide to the Shopify Theme Store versus ThemeForest covers the trade-offs of buying elsewhere. Debutify is one example. Its pricing page (checked October 19, 2026) lists a Free plan at $0 with 26 free widgets and sections, and paid plans billed as subscriptions. The Growth plan is $27.30 a month billed annually ($327.60 a year) or $31.20 billed monthly, with a 3-day free trial. Read our Debutify theme review for the rest. No price was read for Booster or Ella, so they are not compared here.
What do the Theme Store ratings tell you?
Each of the 24 free themes scores lower than each of the six paid picks on the Theme Store listings (checked October 19, 2026). The 24 free themes show 24% to 56% positive reviews. The six paid picks show 85% to 99%. Dawn has 36% from 290 reviews. Eurus has 99% from 605.
Three cautions apply. The figures are the Theme Store’s share of positive reviews, not our ratings. The free and paid themes have different review pools, and the listing does not say why merchants rate them differently. High paid scores are not automatic either: on the Store page of the 24 cheapest paid themes, shares run from 0% to 100%. Nothing here shows that a paid theme makes more sales.
Recent reviews give the texture. The notes below paraphrase reviews on the Dawn reviews page and the Impulse reviews page, with their dates.
- Dawn, praise. In September 2026 a reviewer called it a good, “really intuitive” theme. In October 2026 another called it “fast, professional, lightweight, and easy to manage.”
- Dawn, complaints. In July 2026 a reviewer said a cart drawer problem seen since 2022 is not fixed. In August 2026 another said the theme is basic and sections need custom code.
- Impulse, praise. In September and October 2026 several reviewers wrote that the publisher’s support helped them fix problems.
- Impulse, complaints. In August 2026 a reviewer said the design has barely changed in five years. In September 2026 a reviewer wrote that they had to buy the license to get a locked store working again. In October 2026 one reviewer left a one-line negative review about the theme and its support.
Is a paid Shopify theme worth it?
A paid theme pays for itself only if it raises revenue by more than its price. The break-even lift over one year is the theme price divided by 12 times your monthly revenue. This is arithmetic, not evidence that any theme lifts sales.
Worked example (hypothetical)
| Theme price | Monthly revenue | Calculation | Break-even lift in year one |
|---|---|---|---|
| $350 (Eurus) | $2,000 | 350 / (12 x 2,000) = 350 / 24,000 | 1.46% |
| $350 (Eurus) | $500 | 350 / (12 x 500) = 350 / 6,000 | 5.83% |
| $500 (Impulse) | $2,000 | 500 / 24,000 | 2.08% |
| $500 (Impulse) | $500 | 500 / 6,000 | 8.33% |
Both stores are invented for the example. A store with $500 in monthly sales needs a lift of 5.83% to 8.33% for the theme to break even in year one. A store with $2,000 needs 1.46% to 2.08%. The same price is a smaller hurdle for a larger store.
Which Shopify theme should you pick?
Use the situation that matches your store. The Theme Store catalog-size filter (checked October 19, 2026) shows Few (2-10) with 102 entries, Some (11-100+) with 869 and Lots (500+) with 328. Under those filters, Symmetry appeared under Few, and Impulse, Prestige, Eurus and Impact appeared under Lots. The other picks were not read against the filter.
- Photo-led catalog, small budget: start with Dawn or Craft. Dawn’s listing highlights large media on the product page.
- Products that need long explanations: Sense highlights product detail layouts, testimonials and videos.
- You want a slide-out cart for free: Horizon lists one. Dawn, Craft and Sense list none.
- You need a sticky cart or countdown timer: Prestige, Eurus and Symmetry list both. Impulse lists the timer, Impact lists the sticky cart.
- You need a right-to-left layout: Prestige, Eurus, Symmetry, Pipeline and Impact list it.
- Large catalog: Impulse, Prestige, Eurus and Impact showed up under the Lots (500+) filter. Check the demo with your real collection sizes.
A store with a wide, mixed catalog can also read our guide to the best Shopify theme for a general store. Shopify Plus merchants can read our guide to Shopify Plus themes.
Paid themes can be previewed in your Shopify admin before you buy (Shopify Help Center, checked October 19, 2026). Prestige has the second largest review base of the paid picks (872 reviews), so its demo is a good one to open next to Impulse.
